Marche Rosso “Kupra”

Kupra is a light and lean wine sourced from about 3 acres of century-old vines locally called Lu Bordõ, which genetic testing shows to be in the Grenache type. Also known as Cannonau on the Italian island of Sardinia, it is believed Sardinian shepherds who had emigrated probably planted the vineyard.

Appellation: Marche Rosso IGT

Type: Red, dry

Varietal: 100% Bordõ (Grenache biotype) *

Note*  The grape variety that we call Bordõ appears to have made a long migration in order to arrive in the Piceno. ASSAM (Agenzia Servizi Settore Agroalimentare delle Marche), the regional body that promotes agriculture and food production in the Marche, is studying both its history and its agronomic characteristics, with experimental vineyards, DNA analysis, and subsequent massal reproduction of the very old vines.

2008 Kupra – 85 Points – Robert Parker Wine Advocate (Jun. 2011)

2009 Kupra – 88 Points – Vinous Media (Feb 2013)
"The 2009 Marche Rosso Kupra (Grenache) boasts serious structure, power and depth. Firm tannins frame expressive red cherries, tobacco, menthol licorice and anise in a wine that seems to be more about regional rather than varietal expression. Deceptively medium in body, the Kupra packs a serious punch. At the same time, there is an element of graininess in the tannin that is a bit distracting. If the 2009 comes together in the bottle, it may merit a higher score in the future.” ~ A.G.
