Luigi Baudana, Langhe Chardonnay

This small Chardonnay vineyard is located on a slope not suitable for the big red wines produced in the area but the calcareous soil and good diurnal temperature swings provide excellent conditions for growing this international varietal.

Vineyard: This one acre vineyard is at 1,000 feet above sea level on a northwestern exposure. Planted in 1983 with 1,800 vines per acre.
Planting System: Guyot
Soil: Predominantly calcareous with medium texture.
Harvest: Middle of September
Yield: 2.8 tons per acre
Alcohol: 13%
Vinification: The grapes, picked by hand using small baskets, are softly pressed. The most ferments in stainless steel tanks for about 20 days under temperature controlled conditions of 18 degree Celsius. The wine rests on the fermentation yeasts for about a month. After several rackings, the bottling takes place around the middle of  May.
Aging: 4 months in stainless steel tanks and 3 months in the bottle.
Total Production: 3.500 bottles

 

Tasting Notes: Light straw yellow color. Fruity aromas with notes of pineapple, and hints of bread crust. Fresh and full on the palate carried by the good acidity.

Food Pairings: Goes well with prosciutto and melon, gnocchi or pasta with white sauce.
