VINITY WINE COMPANY

Arshura

Valter Mattoni

Valter Mattoni is the Deus-ex-Machina behind this tiny winery. His wine is made mainly to satisfy his own consumption needs and is an extention of his personality. His last name, Mattoni, translates to “Bricks”. Clay bricks have been used in this Southern Marche region as the main building material because the soil here, just a short distance away from the Adriatic, is rich in clay.
Valter’s nickname is “Roccia”, “The Rock”, maybe to differentiate him from the elegant yet delicate brick-made homes that quickly show their age under the hot and damp climate of the area. The true roccia, rock, can be found further inland as you travel to the Apennines where the buildings are made of travertine and millennia later they are still standing there in their full original glory. Valter is made of this. Strong, decisive and optimistic, just like his Arshura , a solid and  age-defying wine.

In Valter’s own words:” My grandfather Nazzareno was extremely careful when washing his face not to let a single drop of water enter his mouth. From childhood, the only liquid that passed through his lips was wine. Peasant wine. Wine that he would make himself. My other grandfather, Giuseppe , had similar habits, the same that ruled my father Gaspare . How could  I defy those traditions?

“Arshura”, is a play on the Italian word “arsura”, meaning a severe thirst that cannot be fully satisfied.
