DE
CONCILIIS
Located
in the relatively uncharted Cilento zone on the Campania coast. From high-altitude
vineyards looking out toward the Mediterranean, Bruno DeConciliis specializes
in full-bodied, fruit-forward wines from aglianico, which, in the relatively
hot climate of the Cilento, makes wines that are a little more accessible
than young wines from Taurasi. The signature red is the 100% aglianico
‘Naima’ (named for a John Coltrane song).
From
the book of "Wine's of Italy 2004"
After
waiting many years, we are finally able to award Bruno De Conciliis' most
archetypal wine, the 100 per cento aglianico Naima, top honours. The '01
seems to have captured, as if by magic, all the sun of the Cilento zone,
along with all the power and strength its ancient soils have to yield.
It's a wine of majestic structure, as rich and full as a great Mediterranean
red should be. Tight-knit as the best examples of Cote Rotie or Priorato,
it also reveals the balsam, the sharp red berry fruits and the light smokiness
that only aglianico from this particular part of Campania can impart.
All credit, then, to Bruno De Conciliis for having given us a wine of
this calibre. We sincerely hope that he will be able to repeat the achievement
many times more. Acting as pageboys to this sovereign of Campanian wines
come a well-styled version of Fiano Donnaluna and a pleasant, most drinkable
Aglianico Donnalunga, both '02. They are not outstanding, but given that
few people can always drink stellar bottles, it is good to know that we
also have wines like these that you can drink regularly without having
to take out a second mortgage.
